The Sudanese Community- Stoke-on-Trent is closely following the circulating reports concerning the stabbing assault that occurred in the city of Belfast, and the accompanying discussions and reactions in the media and on social media platforms, where information has been shared indicating that the perpetrator is of Sudanese nationality.

While we condemn and denounce this heinous crime, we express our full sympathy with the victim and his family, and wish him a speedy recovery. We also affirm our complete respect for British law and the course of justice, and our confidence in the relevant authorities to fulfil their role in investigating and uncovering the facts in accordance with established legal procedures.

We further affirm that any accusation or criminal responsibility, if proven, remains the individual responsibility of the persons concerned alone, and must not under any circumstances be generalised to an entire community or to any ethnic or national group.

Sudanese residents in the United Kingdom have, over many years, contributed to various aspects of British life, and have been known for their commitment to the law, their positive participation in society, and their service to their local communities.

We call on everyone to avoid hate speech and generalisation, and not to exploit individual incidents to stoke division or incitement among the components of society.

In these circumstances, we affirm the importance of the unity of the Sudanese community in the United Kingdom and its cooperation with local authorities and institutions, and joint efforts to promote the values of mutual respect and peaceful coexistence in the United Kingdom.

The Executive Office of the community will continue to fulfil its responsibilities by carrying on with the organisation of awareness seminars, with the aim of raising awareness of UK laws and culture and promoting positive integration into society.
